Biobehavioral Functioning in Ethnically/Racially Diverse Adolescents with Overweight or Obesity

Project Summary: The primary aim of this study is to examine the temporal associations between positive affect, nonvolitional and volitional self-regulation, physical activity, and eating behaviors in Black and/or Hispanic adolescents with overweight or obesity. This particular study includes the use of social media recruitment strategies and ecological momentary assessment to identify the real-time associations between key study variables. We are currently enrolling participants for this study.

Patients Voices in the Development of a Mobile Health Intervention

Project Summary: The primary aim of this study is to gather qualitative feedback regarding a near-ready mobile health intervention for diverse teens with overweight or obesity.

Biopsychosocial Model of Substance Use in Young Adults

Project Summary: The primary aim of this study is to examine the various biopsychosocial factors (e.g., emotion regulation, positive affect, ACEs) and their relation to substance use in a young adult population. We are currently enrolling for the study at the university.

Identifying Mechanisms of Type 1 Diabetes Self-Care and Glycemic Control

Project Summary: The primary aim of this study is to examine the temporal associations between nonvolitional and volitional self-regulation, diabetes self-care, and glycemic control in Hispanic young adults with type 1 diabetes. This particular study includes the use of social media recruitment strategies and ecological momentary assessment to identify the real-time associations between key study variables. This study is expected to begin in Fall 2023.

Efficacy of a CBT-Based Pain Intervention for Teens with Cancer

Project Summary: The primary aim of this study is to examine the efficacy of a CBT pain program delivered to teens with cancer. The grant-funded intervention will be delivered outpatient. Correlates of intervention effects will be examined. The study is expected to begin in Winter 2022.

Efficacy of a CBT-Based Grief Intervention for Teens

Project Summary: The primary aim of this study is to examine the efficacy of a CBT program delivered to teens who have experienced loss. The grant-funded intervention will be delivered outpatient. Correlates of intervention effects will be examined. The study is expected to begin in Winter 2022.

Prior to joining the faculty at TTU, Dr. Cummings has conducted research examining:

  • The acceptability and efficacy of a scalable mobile health intervention for adolescents with overweight or obesity

  • The individual and dyadic daily associations between positive affect, nonvolitional affect regulation, and obesity-related behavior in teens and their caregivers

  • The relationships between self-regulation, habit/automatic behavior, and diabetes management in adolescents with type 1 diabetes  

  • The efficacy of an online mindfulness-based intervention for adolescents with type 1 diabetes

  • The acceptability and efficacy of a behavioral economic incentive intervention for adolescents with type 1 diabetes

  • The role of affect-driven motivation in understand teen marijuana use
